From My Lens

Shake, rattle & roll…

White Mountains Alaska

A view from a rest area on the Elliott Highway headed to Manley Hot Springs, Alaska. It’s a mere 160 miles from Fairbanks but don’t expect to break any land speed records on this trip. While the first 70ish miles are paved, they’re full of twists, turns and frost heaves that make for sometimes slow and bumpy ride. At the turnoff to Manley Hot Springs, the Elliott Highway becomes a gravel/dirt road. In places it more closely resembles a goat path than an actual road. Even Mapquest and Google Maps list the trip at between 5 and 5.5 hours, meaning they expect you to average 30-35mph. The good news is that although it’s slow going in some places (unless your intent is to test your vehicles structural integrity), the views are simply spectacular and worth slowing down for.
